Restaurant search when people have dietary needs

Updated October 2026

How to use restaurant shortlists responsibly when allergies, vegetarian food, or other needs matter.

Use the app for the shortlist, not the final answer

Restaurant Me can help narrow the area and cuisine, but dietary needs require confirmation from the restaurant itself. Public restaurant data may not include allergens, kitchen practices, or current menu changes.

For allergies or strict dietary requirements, treat every listing as a starting point. Open the restaurant page, check the current menu, and call ahead if the consequences of a mistake are serious.

Choose flexible cuisines

Some cuisines and restaurant formats are easier for mixed groups because they offer several small dishes, vegetable-forward options, or customizable meals. Others may be excellent but less flexible for a group with varied needs.

When the group includes vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, or allergy-sensitive diners, use food type as a filter but avoid assuming the category guarantees suitability.

Reduce pressure on the person with the restriction

The person with the dietary need should not have to reject unsuitable suggestions one by one. Start by asking what types of restaurants usually work, then search within a realistic travel range.

A restaurant that everyone can enjoy comfortably is a better result than the highest-rated option that makes one person uncertain.
